Movie Futurism: The Little Things in 2010: The Year We Make Contact

With the New Year I thought it would be fun to take a fresh look at 1984's 2010: The Year We Make Contact and see what the movie got wrong (or right).

The film is a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and adapts Arthur C. Clarke's 1982 novel 2010: Odyssey Two. The original is one of the best movies of all time, made by one of the best directors of all time, so 2010 really isn't in the same league by any stretch of the imagination. But considered on its own merits, it's a thoughtful, exciting sci-fi film with strong performances from Roy Scheider and John Lithgow and it does some fun poking around into the mythology behind the monoliths.

So the movie was released 26 years ago. The moviemakers did their best to capture the world of the far future of 2010. But because this was a sequel to 2001 their hands were tied in some ways -- they had to start with the assumption that we already had intelligent computers, space stations and space tourism, a permanent lunar base, and the capability to launch manned missions to Jupiter. Even in 1984, everybody knew this was an impossibly rosy view.

But they were playing in Kubrick/Clarke's sandbox and those toys were already inside. What's more interesting are the little things that the makers of 2010 included on their own to dress up the world of 2010.
Things like laptop computers. This is actually a pretty realistic depiction! It's small, with a separate, angled viewscreen. It looks a little chunky, but since it's being used on the beach it's presumably an all-weather model.

Unfortunately the Omni magazine lying next to it is the thing that's really out of place. Omni published its last issue back in 1995.

Computer display screens. Old movies, 2010 included, always seem to get this wrong by using actual computer technology in use at the time of shooting. They end up with clunky black-and-white displays like this one, displayed on huge, clunky cathode-ray tube screens. A better technique would have been to cheat -- hiring an animator to do some hand-drawn animation of planetary orbits, then projecting it on a flat rectangle and pretending it's a computer display. Would have been a closer depiction of how we actually consume digital information in the iPhone era.

Dolphin houses. This is kind of a cheat, since the wife of Roy Scheider's character Dr. Heywood Floyd is a marine biologist, but still -- they have dolphins in their house. There was a bit of New Ageiness around dolphins in the '80s, that we were on the verge of learning their language and communing with them, and I think this is an outgrowth.

Future cars. There's only one shot of a future car in 2010 and it's perfectly acceptable as a real 2010 vehicle. It's actually remarkable that it looks so ordinary, because at the time it looked futuristically streamlined. It hums when it passes by the camera so it's presumably a Prius-style electric car.

The Cold War. This is by far the biggest thing that 2010 gets wrong, and it doesn't even have an excuse -- the Arthur C. Clarke book instead centered on tensions between the U.S. and China which would have been more accurate for today's socio-political climate. In the movie the U.S.S.R. still exists (in reality it didn't even last as long as Omni magazine, dissolving in 1991) and therefore the overwhelming Cold War tensions really date this movie as a product of of the Reagan era.

The Time magazine in that screenshot isn't yet an anachronism, though Time has been bleeding readers and circulation just like the other newsweeklies. But the depiction of the U.S. President is of a generic old white guy. The election of President Obama would have surprised a lot of viewers in 1984.

Future fashion. 2010 does a pretty good job here too. Nothing that Roy Scheider wears would look at all out of the ordinary on today's streets, but 2010 does make one strange sartorial choice regarding businesswear. Two characters, including this TV announcer, have shirt collars with rounded corners and rounded jacket lapels. In fact I'm pretty sure this guy has a double collar, creating a groovy pirate ruffle effect. It's far from awful -- nobody's wearing shimmery future jumpsuits -- but erring on the side of caution always seems to be a good idea when trying to project future fashion

Gigabyte's GA-MA790GP-DS4H is one such unlabelled AMD 790GX motherboard that we spotted. Dual PCIe x16 slots with x8 electrical configuration each, and the enlarged chipset cooler actually overshadows the onboard dedicated frame buffer for the IGP. The AMD 790GX boards look to be really interesting mainstream performance class boards. Weird, but centralized positioning of the USB ports though.

The incredible shrinking computer is about to reach a lower limit in size, with a new computer that’s contained entirely within a wall-wart. Any smaller than this, and the computer would disappear inside the electrical outlet. Called plug computers, Marvell’s new gadgets will resemble cellphone chargers but pack a hefty punch.
Plug computers would draw just about 5W of power, come with a 1.2-GHz CPU, a USB port and internet connectivity. They won’t have a display, but the devices can be used as a home server or a network attached storage for vacation photos and music downloads. The platform will support Linux distributions allowing PC makers to create Linux-based systems off them. And the entire device has been designed to draw less than a tenth the power of a typical PC being used as a home server, says Marvell.

PC manufacturers seem convinced that you do — at least, that would explain the sudden crop of stylish, lightweight home desktops with touchscreens. Dell is the latest PC maker to introduce computer in this category, with a new product called Studio One 19 that targets home users who want a relatively lightweight machine for tasks such web surfing, basic multimedia and notes.
"You can watch HD content, play with your photos, surf the internet or do your taxes on a machine that is full featured," says John New, a marketing executive at Dell.
Dell’s latest offering follows similar products from HP and Asus. HP has had the TouchSmart PC, which has been available for a year and a half, while Asus started offering its Eee Top touchscreen desktop earlier this year.
The Studio One 19 desktop is currently available in Japan and is expected to start retailing in the U.S. in a few weeks.
But unlike its rivals, such as Asus’ 1.6 GHZ Atom processor-based touchscreen desktop, the Studio One 19 comes with enough power to keep most people happy. The Studio One 19 PC allows users to choose between Intel’s Celeron, Dual Core Celeron, Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad Core processors for their machine. It also allows users to choose between Nvidia’s GeForce 9200 or 9400 graphics, up to 4GB of memory, 750 GB of hard disk drive, six USB ports, web camera and optional Blu-ray disc player.

A Luxury PC That Costs as Much as a Used Cadillac

How do you turn a $1000 PC into a $30,000 machine without changing its innards? It a trick that calls for a good alchemist. So say hello to German company, Gaiser High End PCs. Gaiser offers bespoke PCs dipped in 24-carat gold for the bling-bling crowd.
The company’s Tricolor Gold PC, for instance, offer a choice of processors ranging from Intel Atom to Core 2 Duo, solid state drives and Blu-ray player but those are pedestrian details. The real value is in the use of white and yellow gold plating and crystals to create designs that push the price of the PC to a whopping €21,500 or $30,552.
Gaiser does have cheaper models but still prices start around $7,800. The gold-leaf and crystal motifs on its PCs are beautiful but you have to wonder, with the current economic environment, aren’t even the ultra-rich hurting?

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

Its combination of good performance for affordable price has seen it claw back into the graphics market with its most recent generation of cards, and now it looks positioned to do the same with the CPU side of the business. While it doesn't intend to challenge Intel's top performing Core i7 CPUs for now, AMD's latest, the Phenom X4 955 Black Edition (BE), launches a broadside across the bow of Intel's mainstream quad-core processors — in particular the Core 2 Q9550.
Based on AMD's AM3 socket, the 955 is a quad-core, 45nm process CPU running at 3.2GHz, as a result of a 16x multiplier on top of a 200MHz bus. It has 6MB shared L3 cache, along with 64+64KB data + instruction L1 and 512KB L2 cache per core. Being a flagship chip, it's quite a power sucker, at 125W TDP. Being a Black Edition chip, it's also multiplier unlocked — and this combined with the split plane voltage introduced on AM2+ should mean some fairly decent DIY speed increases.
Moving to 938-pin AM3 means a few things; firstly DDR3 support, and secondly the 128-bit integrated memory controller has had its Hypertransport link bumped from 1.8GHz on AM2+ to a healthy 2.0GHz. The processor should be backwards compatible with AM2+ boards, but be warned you'll only be able to use DDR2 on these, and your vendor will need to have released a BIOS update to support the CPU.

ASUS brings it on with latest AMD Socket AM2 and Intel Core Duo based mobo’s

The first of these boards, labelled “M2N32-SLI Deluxe”, looks like a successor to ASUS’s current top of the line “A8N32-SLI Deluxe” board.

Utilising an as yet unreleased NVIDIA C51D+MCP55P combination and designed for AMD’s much-anticipated AM2 Socket platform. Strangely enough this board features Geil DDR2 memory with 3.5” (floppy style) power connections plugged into them via the use of a 5.25” (hard-drive/optical style) to 2 x 3.5” power adapter lead. The modules themselves have voltage pots on top (most likely to adjust the DDR2 voltage) so could be engineering samples especially used to help fine-tune the board design. In addition the board is equipped with Analog Devices brand-new AD1988 audio CODEC, which in conjunction with the supplied microphone, provides H/W-assisted noise cancellation technology to filter out the background noise with minimal CPU utilisation. According to ASUS reps on the stand, they expect mass-production on this board to begin during June/July.

The second of the boards, labelled “N4L-VM DH”, features both Intel’s latest mobile chipset 945GT, Core Duo processor (Yonah), in addition to supporting Intel’s VIIV Technology Quick-Resume feature. The board features a generous two PCI slots in addition to one x16 PCI-E and one x1 PCI-E slots in a Micro-ATX form-factor. This should enable people who want to build themselves a high-performance/low-noise gaming rig in addition to functioning as a Dual-tuner (or even Triple if they can find a PCI-E x1 DVB-T or PAL Analogue based TV-Tuner card) Intel VIIV-compatible box can now do so quite easily

Acer releases 3D laptop The AS5738

The AS5738 uses TriDef 3D technology, which includes a 3D screen, software and glasses. The idea is to give users a unique media experience, not just with specifically developed media and software, but also by taking standard content such as pictures and last-generation videogames and processing them appropriately to add the illusion of depth.

The 15.6" HD display is coated with a special film that allows LCD technology to render images stereoscopically when users are wearing the included 3D polarizing glasses. This time Intel has taken the leap after losing to AMD in the Duo core war. The new chip is called "Kentsfield" this sounds weird right compared to the core 2 duo u r listening now. PCs are rumored to increase 70 percent.

Details about the chip have been scarce. So far, Intel has declined to release specifications and performance data, but industry sources recently indicated that the processor will be clocked with 2.67 GHz and run on a 1066 MHz FSB. Since the CPU combines two Conroe dual-core chips, the chip will carry 2 x 4 MB L2 cache; Kentsfield will be a Conroe "drop-in" chip and work with the 965 and 975 series chipsets on today's Core 2 Duo motherboards. Intel is expected to offer press and analysts first access to the quad-core CPU at the Fall IDF, which will be held from 26 - 28 September in San Francisco. Today, it's AMD that's struggling. Once seen as lean and swift compared with the aging Intel juggernaut, AMD is now looking somewhat anemic. The Sunnyvale, California, CPU company isn't giving up the fight easily. AMD slashed prices of its own processor line when Intel launched Core 2, and the typical AMD system tends to be somewhat less expensive—if also lower-performing—than similarly configured Intel Core 2 systems. But price cuts have hurt AMD's margins, and the last thing the company wants is to become a second-tier supplier, as it was back in the days when it was perceived only as a second source for Intel-compatible CPUs. Kentsfield, which industry sources refer to as "Core 2 Quadro," arrived as a 2.67 GHz version with a 266 MHz/1066 MHz FSB. The test engineers were able to adjust the FSB to 1333 MHz - which is still supported by the 975X chipset - and overclock the CPU by about 25%. The benchmarks were conducted with clock speeds ranging from 2.0 GHz to 3.33 GHz.

I’d be willing to bet that at least 80% of the steampunk USB drives I’ve seen haven’t been available for purchase. However, for once this one is up for sale and it doesn’t look too shabby. The only thing that’s going to really hurt you is the price tag and believe me, it will hurt. We’re not even talking it being a matter of hundreds of dollars, it’s more like thousands.

It’s not that it’s not a good steampunk creation, because it is that. It’s just that that’s all it is, it’s just good. It’s not fantastic and it most definitely won’t stop you in your tracks. The drive doesn’t even come with a ton of memory at that price. It is going to cost you $3,000 for all of 4GB of memory. HP launches App Store for TouchSmart Printers

A few months ago, we covered the HP’s Photosmart Premium web-connected printer, which is due to be released at the end of the month. It would appear that HP is borrowing a page from the Apple playbook as the Photosmart is also slated to have its own App store.
Since the Photosmart comes with Touchsmart Web technology, it allows the user access to the web via 4.33 inch touchscreen. A user can access the App store by hitting the “Get More” option on this screen.
From there, it becomes a virtual shopping network as the user can access many applications that are represented by small icons. There is also a place for user ratings, reviews, and even a place to submit future applications.
Current applications include Snapfish, Google Maps, Coupons.com, Weathernews Inc., and Fandango. There are lots of fun apps like Dreamworks and Disney’s Printables which allow the user to print off coloring and puzzle pages for the kids. Adults might like the Sudoku application.
I mentioned before that HP is stealing from the Apple playbook, but I have suddenly realized that App stores are the new business model for any piece of technology. Basically, you buy the tech, then you customize it with whatever you want. Indeed, it is a sign of the times of a very personal age of technology.

Those of you that love the FPS shooter games will fall even more in love with them with the Wireless Game Gun. As you can see by the You Tube video after the jump, someone has finally perfected a way of putting a screen on a motion controlled controller that resembles a military machine gun.
That someone is an engineer and inventor who is known all across the tech and gadget blogosphere as The Redneck Techie. The video shows him moving around the room and stalking in some “classic Tom Clancy” style with this unique gaming peripheral.
You will notice the cord that dangles from the gun and ends up in his pocket. That is apparently the batteries for the unit, which “were too big to fit into the gun”. Perhaps version 2.0 will not have this wire and really be wireless, but I don’t see it being any more annoying than the Wii-strap.
The Wireless Game Gun is Plug-and-Play compatible with Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, and the PC, and maybe even for Macs. You can look into pre-ordering it here, but you might notice that the site looks a little antiquated. It is projected that the Wireless Game Gun will be available by Christmas, but there is no word on price as yet.

Peregrine Gaming Glove turns your hand into a controller

The shot that you see to the left is my hand, taken at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle last weekend. It was here that I saw the booth for the Peregrine gaming glove.
As I tried on the Peregrine glove, and I couldn’t help but feel like Tom Cruise’s character from Minority Report. Granted, I didn’t have a giant glass display with motion controls, but I did have the ability to touch 30 points of my hand to get control in a game.
Even though I was at a gaming convention, I’m not too big in the MMO games. Many of the controls are quite complex, and attacks are often performed with by hitting some keys simultaneously. Sometimes having a hotkey on the Peregrine glove could easily give the player a great advantage. There is a video of it after the jump. I am not really into MMO games, but I’m sure that you or someone that you love (or, in this case, not love at all) is into them. Clearly, he or she might be wanting a gaming keyboard like the Merc Stealth.

The Merc Stealth is made by SteelSeries, makers of the Zboard. The user won’t be able to fold up his or her keyboard with the Merc Stealth, but you have to admire its blue glow. By the way, that glow has two other options of purple and red, and four different illumination modes including subtle, ambient, intense, and off. (Yes, off is considering an illumination mode.)

Every year, January is all about CES in Las Vegas. It’s the high tech Disneyland for the gadget obsessed. Everything with a circuit will be announced and drooled over. But already, the one item that’s catching everyone’s attention is Panasonic’s monster 150 inch Plasma HDTV.

Dubbed as the largest model in the world, it measures 47 inches larger than the current record holder, also by Panasonic, although to be fair, its designed Matsushita. The screen measures 2 meters by 3.5 meters, and you can bet it’s resolution will be much better than the 103 inch model, which sports a 3001:1 contrast ratio and over 2 million pixels. This all means that in High Defintion, it may be difficult to tell the difference between a real person and one on the screen unless one was standing right there talking to them. Which is cool for some great teleconferencing options, much less enjoying one’s favorite movies like they were in the scene. Too bad it’s in plasma though. Until persistent burn in problems are completely solved, it’s a heck of a lot to pay for 150 inch ghost images.
The new 150-inch plasma HDTV should be available to the public in 2009, and hopefully by then the cost won’t be so astronomical to prevent the common millionaire from buying one. Meanwhile, they’ll just have to settle for that 103 inch plasma

Ultimate Gaming Chair

Here I thought that the Pyramat Sound Chair was the ultimate gaming chair, but I was wrong. Very wrong.

That title definitely goes to the Ultimate Game Chair. The name really gets the point across, eh?
This chair is packed with features. To start off, there are 12 vibration motors throughout the chair that are synchronized with the games action. Nerdy and cool
As far as sound goes, you can use your stock headphones from a MP3 player etc, or plug the chair into your home stereo system to get full surround sound. There are adjustable 3D stereo speakers built into the chair as well.
Any type of gaming accessory will probably work with the chair, including steering wheels and custom controllers.
Comfort was definitely not overlooked when this chair was designed. It’s all leather material, has an adjustable headrest, leg rest, and even a beverage and remote controller holder. Oh, and I forgot to mention that this chair will give you a nice massage, too. Seriously.
Quite a few game consoles are compatible with the Ultimate Gaming Chair, including the PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, PC, Mac, PS1, and Xbox Live. For audio only, you can use all those and your iPod, DS, PSP, or generic MP3 player.
Just to recap, you get a massage chair, beverage holder, stereo sound, vibrators synced to the game, and a remote holder. If you’re a serious gamer, price means nothing, but if you’re not, the $400 price tag might give you some second thoughts
